Developmental Milestones — 4-5 years

Often obvious at this time is the tremendous increase in pre-academic skills and search for independence as your child prepares for the world of kindergarten.

Additional milestones include:

MOVEMENT SKILLS

  • Stands on 1 foot for 10 seconds or longer
  • Hops, somersaults
  • Swings, climbs
  • Skips

FINGER SKILLS

  • Copies triangle and other geometric figures
  • Draws person with a body
  • Prints some letters
  • Dresses and undresses without help
  • Uses fork, spoon, and butter knife
  • Usually cares for own toilet needs

LANGUAGE/SOCIAL SKILLS

  • Recalls parts of a story and tells stories
  • Speaks in sentences of more than 5 words
  • Uses future tense
  • Wants to be like his friends
  • More likely to agree to rules
  • Likes to sing, dance, act
  • Sometimes demanding, sometimes eagerly cooperative

COGNITIVE SKILLS

  • Can count 10 or more objects
  • Correctly names at least 4 colors
  • Able to distinguish fantasy from reality
