Developmental Milestones 3-4 years

With your child’s 3rd birthday, he begins to mature away from the “terrible twos” and his world begins to become dominated by fantasy and vivid imagination.

Additional milestones include:

MOVEMENT SKILLS

  • Hops and stands on 1 foot for up to 5 seconds
  • Walks upstairs and downstairs without support
  • Kicks ball forward
  • Throws ball overhand
  • Catches bounced ball most of the time

FINGER SKILLS

  • Copies lines, circles, and squares
  • Draws person with 2-4 body parts
  • Uses scissors
  • Begins to copy some capital letters

LANGUAGE/SOCIAL SKILLS

  • Tells stories
  • Speaks in sentences of 5-6 words
  • Speaks clearly enough for strangers to understand
  • Engages in pretend play
  • Imagines many unfamiliar images may be “monsters”
  • Often cannot distinguish between fantasy and reality
  • Engages in cooperative play with other children

COGNITIVE SKILLS

  • Names colors
  • Follows 3 part commands
  • Recalls parts of a story
  • Understands concept of same/different
  • Understands concept of counting and may know a few numbers
